{"id":597,"date":"2014-03-05T10:52:58","date_gmt":"2014-03-05T10:52:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/localhost\/monderlaw\/?p=597"},"modified":"2020-07-10T11:39:02","modified_gmt":"2020-07-10T11:39:02","slug":"things-to-know-in-jail","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.monderlaw.com\/news\/things-to-know-in-jail\/","title":{"rendered":"Things To Know In Jail"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Administrative Segregation<\/strong><\/span>\u2014A status of confinement for non-disciplinary reasons that provides closer supervision, control and protection than is provided in general population.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Commissary<\/strong><\/span>\u2014The jail store for inmates, which provides food and hygiene items, correspondence material, tennis shoes, reading glasses, phone cards and over-the-counter medication.<\/p>\n<hr id=\"system-readmore\" \/>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Contraband<\/strong><\/span>\u2014Includes illegal items, explosives, deadly weapons, drugs, controlled substances, and any item that is controlled, limited or prohibited on the grounds or within the secure perimeter of a correctional facility.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Custody level<\/strong><\/span>\u2014An assigned category achieved by objective scoring that identifies an inmate\u2019s required housing and supervision needs, and which determines to a large extent where and how the inmate is housed.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Detainer<\/strong><\/span>\u2014A warrant placed against an inmate for pending charges from another jurisdiction.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Disciplinary Lockdown<\/strong><\/span>\u2014A restrictive status of confinement to which an inmate receiving major discipline can be committed.&nbsp; Inmates in this status are restricted to their living area and lose all revocable privileges, retaining the rights to professional visits, showers, and legal phone calls.&nbsp; Inmates shall be placed in disciplinary custody status for no longer than 72 hours per hearing.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Disciplinary Isolation<\/strong><\/span>\u2014A restrictive status of confinement to which an inmate receiving major discipline can be committed.&nbsp; Inmates in this status are housed separately and are denied the use all personal items except bedding, clothing, legal papers, personal correspondence, hygiene items, and religious reading material.&nbsp; Inmates shall be placed in disciplinary custody status for no longer than ten days per hearing.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>DNA Detection of Sexual Violent Offenders Act<\/strong><\/span>\u2014A state law that requires a blood sample be taken from inmates who have been convicted of certain sexual and violent offenses.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Facility Commander<\/strong><\/span>\u2014The highest ranking sworn supervisor assigned to a facility.&nbsp; The Facility Commander, who is responsible for the overall operation of the facility, is a Captain at the larger facilities and a Lieutenant at the smaller facilities.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Grievance<\/strong><\/span>\u2014A formal written complaint that is submitted by inmates to address a perceived problem in their housing, care, or treatment by staff.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Disciplinary Hearing Officer<\/strong><\/span>\u2014The person who is responsible for conducting misconduct hearings and decides if discipline is deserved.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Indigent Inmate<\/strong><\/span>\u2014Inmates shall be deemed indigent if their account balance is $2.00 or less.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Security Lockdown<\/strong><\/span>\u2014Securing a correctional facility or unit by restricting prisoner movement to their housing area.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Disciplinary hearing<\/strong><\/span>\u2014A hearing held in the jail to determine if a Rule Violation Report is substantiated and, if so, what discipline the inmate will receive.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Non-Contact Visit<\/strong><\/span>\u2014A visit in which the inmate and the visitor are not permitted to be in physical contact and are generally separated by a physical barrier.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Psychiatric Security Unit<\/strong><\/span>\u2014A housing area or group of cells designated for inmates confined in a facility-based mental health unit licensed by the California Department of Mental Health.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Reclassification<\/strong><\/span>\u2014The reassessment of an inmate&#8217;s custody level following the addition or removal of charges, sentencing, or jail incidents.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Revocation<\/strong><\/span>\u2014Refers to an administrative decision ending a parole because the offender violated the conditions of parole.
